New Page Rank

I see that Google has been updating the pagerank over the last few days.

The homepage of KML’s Corner website has gone up one point to a page rank of 2.

I have also noticed that Google has been digging deeper into the website.

Several of my sub pages now have a page rank where none of them did before.

This blog still remains unranked though.

Hopefully the next time the updating comes around, I will see some action here.

I will have to be more active in promoting both the storefront and the blog.

From what I have read, that seems to be one of the ways to get noticed more by Google.

Will have to check it out.

Pretty Wedgwood Plate

Wedgwood - a classic in blue and white - especially the pretty Jasperware.

These items are Made in England and are highly collectible.

We have the Hebe and Eagle annual plate from the year 2000.

It measures 7 1/2 and is in the original blue box.

Electricity is Back

After losing the power for over 5 days all is back to normal now.

The best thing about it - the hot showers.

The nights were pretty chilly - down to 6 degrees the second one, but the generator helped.

There are still 70,000 without power, and some will not get it back until after Christmas.

The power of Mother Nature - she is not one to mess with!

A Winter Ice Storm

Our area of New England received quite a winter storm overnight.

Over 2 inches of rain fell, and as it coated the trees and anything else outside, ice built up on all the surfaces.

We awoke to no electricity and a cold house.

With over 400,000 households without power, it is a record for our state.

They hope to have it back on next week. Until then, the trusty generator will keep us warm as long as we use the power sparingly and thoughtfully.

Any questions may take a bit longer to be answered, but we will get back to you.

Vintage National Geographic

We only have a couple listed at the moment, but we do have a few vintage issues of the National Geographic magazines.

We even have a couple dating back to the early 1900’s.

The photography in them is just as beautiful as today’s issues, and the articles are also filled with great information.

Many changes have come to the magazine and the world over the years - what great documentation and history these issues have!

Die Cast Car Clock Collectible

Country Music

Tonight the County Music Awards will be handed out to today’s biggest and hottest stars.

This genre of music has come a long way since I first started listening to it back in the early 1970’s

Some is for the better, and some, in my opinion has really gone down the drain.

Before all this digital enhancing, the singers had to really know how to and be able to sing.

Today, if you see some of them singing without the magic of the recording studio, it almost hurts the ears - no tone, off-key, and no melody.

There are definitely some talented ones out there - just have to listen a little harder to hear them.

Wonder what this music will sound like in another 30 years.

Jersey Sheets

Have you ever tried a set of sheets made of 100% cotton jersey knit?

We tried them for the first time a couple of months ago, and were pleasantly surprised by the feel and performance of them.

As the weather turns cooler it is a shock to get into a cold bed. The coolness of regular sheets is welcomed in the summer, but not when autumn starts to visit again.

And it was still too warm to put the flannel sheets on yet, so we tried the jersey ones.

I have to admit, they are a bit stretchy, but they are just the right weight for this time of the year - not too cool, and not too hot.

They feel comfortable against the skin, not rough, but not smooth like regular sheets either.

Comfortable, breathable, cotton jersey sheets - treat yourself to their unique feeling.

Spode Blue Room China

Josiah Spode developed this famous dinnerware in England in the 1780’s.

It was named Spode China and was created as dinnerware from the orient became scarce and the demand for it became great in England.

He developed a formula for bone china and the glazing for this earthenware that is still used today.

We have several plates from the Spode Blue Room collection in various patterns that can be found here.

These classic blue and white patterns are beautiful and it is no wonder they have stood the test of time with their popularity.

Murano Art Glass

We listed a few pieces of pretty Murano art glass that is made in Italy.

The glass is blown and formed into beautiful decorative pieces.

Murano is a region in Italy that is famous for producing these beautiful glass creations.

In the year 1291, glassmakers were forced to move from Venice to the Murano islands just north of that famous city.

The Venice town rulers feared the glass foundries would destroy the city’s wood buildings.

The glassmakers flourished and became quite affluent and prominent throughout Europe.

Today the artisans still apply the same century old techniques to create beautiful art glass, jewelry, and chandeliers.

History and tradition are a part of each of these beautiful pieces.

The Smell of Autumn

The smell of autumn was very strong in the air as we walked in the woods today.

Much stronger than it had been earlier this week.

It was a new territory today and there was more grass than we normally find in the woods.

The sun was warm - there were even a few dragonflies flitting about as we walked along.

Coming back down the hill was when the autumn scent really hit us.

The soft breeze was coming from the forest, across the sun-warmed grass, and onto our faces - we were too out of breath to notice it on the way up.

We enjoyed this delicious smell all the way back to the car.

Frosted Crystal Seal

Searching for Treasure

Our inventory doesn’t contain many antique items, but the few that we do have are kind of neat.

You will find them under the Collectibles category in the store.

We spent an afternoon browsing through a local antique store this past weekend.

There were so many unique things there - all the beautiful glass creations, the jewelry, kitchen items, and even furniture and wall hangings.

You just don’t find these types of things anymore except in a store like this.

An afternoon wasn’t really enough to browse everything there, and the selection was so vast that any collector would find a treasure.

We found lots of great things, but most of the items were a bit pricy.

Perhaps next time we will have better luck.

If you get a chance to visit one of these little treasure shops, take a minute to enjoy the unique, one of a kind items they have to offer.

What Footwear to Choose For Hiking

There are so many kinds of shoes and boots designed for hiking - how does one decide on what to buy or even begin to choose a style?

There are basically two different kinds of footwear designed for hiking.

You need to consider the distance you will be traveling, the terrain you will be walking or climbing, and the environment - what kind of protection will you need from the elements?

A hike along a smooth trail would be considered a “light hike”. The best footwear for this type of hiking is a pair of day hikers - like the shoes shown above.

They are designed in the style of a sneaker, but are built a bit more rugged to handle a mild hike.

For more uneven trails, longer hikes, or if you will be carrying a heavy pack, a pair of hiking boots is a must.

They offer more support for the ankle and some have a steel shank for more foot support.

A lightweight boot is great for long day trips or short backpacking ones.

Another thing to consider is the environment you will be hiking in. If your feet will be getting wet, you will want a pair of waterproof boots or shoes.

Some have a membrane lining such as Gore-tex that keeps the water out, and it dries pretty quickly.

A stiffer boot will offer more support on a rugged terrain.

For a rocky or slippery terrain, you will want a pair of boots that have a deep tread for gripping.

It is always best to try on the shoes or boots that you will be using for hiking.

Buying them later in the day when the foot is more swollen is best for finding the correct fit.

Bring the socks you will be wearing with them.

As far as sizes go - all shoes are made differently and going by a size is not the best deciding factor.

Try them on, twist, stand on your toes, and back on your heels to see how they feel.

And don’t forget - you will need to break them in before you head out in them for a hike.

Blog Socializing

KML’s Corner has just become a member of Blog Catalog.

I have found it to be a successful move for my other two blogs, and I couldn’t wait to have this one listed also.

My first blog, Photography by KML was added in July of 2007.

Let’s Jump Together was added in May 2008.

I decided to keep this one separate from those for the time being as it is more for my business, and I want to see how it performs on its own rather than on the back of the other two.

It will be an interesting experiment!

A Search on Google

I just performed an experiment on Google.

I did a blog post on 9/5 that featured a set of Mikasa Bear and Bull Bottle stoppers.

This item has been listed in my store for many months as we have quite a few of them in our inventory.

I submit a feed to Google Base that includes all my store items, on the average of every 2-3 days.

Doing a search for these bottle stoppers pulls up my blog post from 9/5 on the first page. Very impressive since it is a recent post.

What bothered me though, even when I put the title of the item and included my store name in the search - nothing at all came up for my website store.

All I can think of is that I must have something wrong somewhere with the keywords or titles or ?????

I have recently had my website redesigned, but that should not affect any of the items coming up in searches - the database has not changed.

I would think that Google having my items in their Froogle base would have some effect on the searches.

I guess not.

I will do some research to see what I can come up with.

If anyone has any ideas I would love to hear them!

Book Keeping Blues

It is that time of the year again - the third quarter is drawing to a close, and the paper work from the summer has been piling up.

I am usually a couple months behind on my monthly book keeping tasks - but the summer just puts me into the mode of - it can wait until later - and later just never seems to arrive.

So instead of just a couple months, it has now doubled to four, almost five months behind.

Man - I really cannot stand the idea of getting it all organized, checked off, added, and input into the computer, but I know if I do not tackle it soon, then the holidays will be upon us.

And after the holidays comes the dreaded year end - and we all know that tax time comes on the heels of year end.

I had better get myself motivated and at least start organizing the paperwork - but wait, the warm fall day is calling yet again - and I cannot resist!

What is Thread Count on a Bed Sheet?

We have all heard about the thread count on bed sheets, but do we really know what it means?

The thread count refers to the number of threads running vertically and horizontally in a square inch of the sheet fabric.

This number can run anywhere between 80-700, with most sheets being between the 180-320 range.

Of course, the higher the thread count, the more expensive the sheet.

But before you decide to spend the high dollar on the high count, you also need to know the ply of the thread.

There are 1 ply and 2 ply threads that figure into the count.

One ply threads are as they state, one thread only, where the two ply are two threads twisted together to make one thread.

So when you are about to purchase a 600 thread count sheet, are you getting 600 single ply threads per square inch, or 300 2-ply threads per square inch.

If you are looking for the softest, lightest sheet, then the single ply threads will offer a finer, more delicate fabric.

The 2 ply threads offer a stronger, more durable, yet heavier sheet.

One other factor to consider when purchasing a sheet, is how the cotton that it is made of has been processed.

If the cotton has been carded and combed, then it will have a silky feeling as in the finest percale sheets.

If the cotton has a napped finish, then you will get the benefit of warmth, as in flannel sheets.

There are also processes for jersey and sateen sheets that affect the cotton and it’s feel and performance.

The best thing to do when purchasing a sheet is to actually feel the fabric. Will the rest of yourself be happy with the feel and weave of the sheet.

If they feel good, and look good with your decor, then that is all that matters in the end.
